Merl Saunders, longtime collaborator with Jerry Garcia passed away yesterday while battling some-type of infection. I had the pleasure of getting on stage and playing percussion with Merl at the San Anselmo Community Center for his 60th birthday around 1994 or so. Merl was a very kind soul..kind of like a father / grandfather figure. He was 74 years old. We've lost a couple of great local musicians this year, notably Martin Fierro, another great musician and a San Anselmo Cat. R.I.P. Merl.
