In 2013, 6 people were killed on the main SMC campus. On October 14, 2024 an employee was shot at SMC satellite campus called The Center for Media and Design, which also hosts popular radio station KCRW, which airs many NPR shows and Henry Rollin's Fanatic program.
** This is a developing story. The gunman has yet to be caught. No motive has been established, however, the victim has been identified as an employee of SMC. The shooting occurred at 9:15 pm according to KTLA. All classes have been canceled at all SMC campuses for the day. **
